What would you do today
if you
knew that a disaster would
happen in 3 years?... or next month?
...would you start preparing now?
Preparation is an insurance policy
that costs very little considering what you and your family would
experience if you are not prepared. We live in a very technologically interconnected and interrelated society.
Our population has high expectations that food, water,
electricity, material goods and services will always be available simply
because they always have been. How well are you prepared for loss of
services such as water, electrical power and food for even a short term
event?
A single crisis event
can cause a domino effect that may threaten your survival.
No parent wants
to look at their child and tell them that there is nothing to eat
because they didn't store extra food for an emergency. Can you keep your
family warm when your current source of heat is no longer available?
What do I prepare for? Rather
than focus on a specific event, consider the EFFECTS of events that
result in loss of electrical power, your shelter, communications
capability, access to goods and services, and breakdown of civil
authority and civility. When you focus on these, there are three major time
scales to consider:
Short term - less
than 10 days without your normal sources of electrical power, clean
water, food or access to bank accounts. This may include
relocation to a safer area.
Medium Term - from
10 days to 3 months. Includes recovery period from natural or
man-made disaster events.
Long Term -
requires extensive self-reliance and self-sufficiency to weather events
such as a financial system melt-down and civil unrest.
