Long term survival is much more than food, water, shelter
and security. If
you think you can prepare for long term survival on your own you will be
disappointed in the results. As humans we need an association with
others to survive. |
Ask
yourself:
Who should be involved in my preparations? Family, friends, neighbors, a larger group?
What current connections do I have that I can include as participants?
Who has expert knowledge I could use?
Who has access to resources that would help?
Don't go-it alone.
The go-it-alone approach is much more difficult than working alongside
others in a group survival
model. If you decide to include others beyond close family, be
sure they have a genuine interest in preparing and that they can get
along well with others in stressful situations.
One of the BEST things you can
do is to encourage your neighbors, family and friends to become prepared.
You don't need to sound like a "survival nut" ... just send them an
email inviting them to this site so they can be informed and make their own decisions
Your Resource
Connections
Consider who has hobbies that give them
knowledge about skills that would help in the Big Crunch.
Establish a good relationship with your physician so you can easily
get a larger prescription than normal if the signs point to a long term
crisis. Who do you know who can help you wire up a solar powered
electrical system or set up a simple water purification system? Who knows about
firearms, back packing, auto repair, advanced first aid?
Get to Know Your Neighbors!
When all hell breaks loose is not the time to
introduce yourself to your neighbors. Get to know them, their interests
and family. By getting to know them, they will get to know you.
The results will be that you and your neighbors will be better able to work
together at crunch time. The more neighbors you encourage to make
survival preparations, the fewer will show up on your doorstep needing
charity.
WARNING!
When starting your survival preparations its easy to become overly consumed
with "survival". Don't stop enjoying life, and don't
alienate family and friends by becoming "survival nut". If you want to
survive, survive today by enjoying your life. Don't isolate
yourself from your current lifestyle, family, friends and co-workers.
Don't
become all consumed about this. Stay balanced. Enjoy the satisfaction of completing each
milestone of your plan. Take your Bug-Out-Bag and go camping for a
weekend with family or friends. Keep things in perspective and don't try to become fully
prepared in 2 weeks. It may take a year or more before you are confident of your preparations. And
in survival, confidence is king! Pace yourself, and don't get yourself
into a credit crisis.
Connections to Avoid
While working on your preparations you may come across
people and organizations on the internet that are slanted towards the hard-core
"anti-government" side.
While they may provide nuggets of information, the temptation to align
yourself with more experienced groups should be evaluated very carefully. The
big down side is that many hard core groups may have some unsavory
social views or personal philosophies that may not sync with yours. Your preparations
should be moving your family or group towards self-reliance and self sufficiency, not
subservience to a group that may melt down and fall apart during
a real crisis.
