   Survival Electrical Plan

Objective  Provide Alternate Electrical Power

Shifting to a life with little or no electrical power is a tough transition unless you have a plan that works for you and your specific circumstances.

After even a short time without electrical power you come to realize how dependant we are on the commercial power grid.  Alternative options include a full range of short and long term plans. Your survival electrical plan should cover even short term solutions that can aid you in transition to life without electricity or one that relies on a low powered self-generated, self-stored system.

Decision Time
There are a host of deciding factors involved in considering what type of self generated power system on which to rely such as:

  • How much power do you need.. and for what
  • Long term vs. short term solutions
  • Cost of various systems
  • Complexity of system repair and maintenance
  • Cost of on-hand spare parts
  • Do-it-yourself vs. contractor installed systems
  • Fuel storage capability
  • Availability and quality of natural energy sources for solar, wind and mini-hydro
  • Full systems or smaller systems to charge batteries

Micro-Hydro Systems
There are currently many small micro-hydro systems on the market for home use.  If you have a good stream close by with even a moderate drop in elevation, this may be an excellent choice.

Solar Generation
Solar electrical systems are the most expensive systems but the have no moving parts, make no noise, are allowed by building codes nationwide and can be mounted on your roof or on a motor-swivel system that tracks the sun.

Wind
If you live in an area with more than average windy days and an average annual wind speeds of at least 9 miles per hour you can realistically consider a wind power generator.  There are very few areas that meet these requirements for a sustainable system.

Fuel Powered Generators
This category includes generators powered by gasoline, diesel, natural gas and propane. While appropriate for short term solutions, if the crisis devolves to a serious long-term loss of the electrical grid, you will find it hard or impossible to replace your fuel supplies.

Extending Your Power
Being able to ration whatever emergency electrical power you have will be a great benefit.  Use compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent ones.  Your electrical lighting load will drop by about 60%. Evaluate carefully what electrical loads you really need.
