LONG
TERM SHELTER
Adequate Room -
Your planned place of shelter must have enough room for you, all the
others who will share the shelter and enough room for survival supplies
and for the increased activities involved in creating a sustainable
environment. When
power and water are no longer being supplied by your utility company,
you may have to shift cooking and sanitation facilities outside.
Livable - For long
term situations, a comfortable place to relax after the labors of
survival living will be a big help for morale. Set up specific
areas for activities so people are not tripping over each other.
Keep noisy activities as far away from sleeping areas as possible.
Safe - The
structure should be strong enough to withstand any reasonably
anticipated weather events, keep out the elements and be insulated to
moderate the inside temperatures during times of even less than extreme
heat and cold. Rodent and insect infested structures are not safe.
Secure - If the
probability of extreme social unrest or high impact shortages of basic
good are a probability, take measures to ensure your shelter is secure
from others. You may need to establish a watch to
monitor the approaches. If you are sheltering in a medium to high
density population area, ensure your activities, noise and nighttime
interior illumination will not attract undue attention.
SHORT
TERM SHELTER
Short term shelters can
be makeshift lean-tos, sheds, tents, cars or RVs. The common
attribute is that they provide shelter from the elements as well as,
except in the case of make-shift shelters, protection from insects and
animals.
