Long term survival after a nuclear, biological or chemical event does not take a lot of special resources, facilities and training. |
Long term survival after events that create localized widespread contamination of the air, land and water are not that hard to prepare for, even if you are in a likely target area. The best preparation is to live up wind and far away from potential targets. If you are anywhere near a ground zero point, you will have to rely on emergency services for assistance and relocation.
Nuclear
If you survive the initial blast from a nuclear weapon or dirty bomb, your immediate task is to get far away from the residual radiation from contaminated areas and downwind fallout zones. Preplanning includes where you will go and how you will get there. Keeping a Bug-Out-Bag in your home, vehicle and, if possible, a small bag at work that you can easily carry on foot will provide you essential survival equipment. If you cannot permanently relocate to a low priority target area, having a "fallout shelter" will provide protection and shelter if properly stocked, and constructed for shielding and is properly ventilated. Even a standard house can be easily secured from external contamination.
Biological
There is a wide range of potential, widespread biological events ranging from pandemics to purposeful or accidental release and propagation of biological contaminants to the air or water. Most people do not know that we are surrounded by natural hazardous biological agents like tetanus which lives in the ground in your yard. Anthrax outbreaks occur in the United States on an annual basis in livestock and wild game animals such as deer. Some biological agents can be spread person to person while other require direct contact with the agent. Natural biological events can cause massive crop failures over large areas.Chemical
Chemical events can be accidental releases from industrial production facilities or acts of terrorists. Effects range from contamination of air, water and ground. A few years ago, much press was given to exposing the ability of terrorists to commander crop spraying planes to create widespread release of chemical agents. While the potential harm can be quite high from a chemical release, these events will be highly localized. You need not be overly concerned about chemical releases unless you live or work downwind of large chemical processing faculties or attractive, high profile terrorist targets.Next Advanced Area
