Your FIRST STEP is having your neighbors, friends
and family working on THEIR survival preparations to prevent their
un-preparedness from negatively impacting you when disaster strikes.

Before launching into a
protection plan, you need to evaluate what and who you are protecting and against
what hazards. You currently protect yourself and assets by various
forms of insurance such as auto, home, life and medical needs. You
also depend on local law enforcement and emergency services. During a
natural disaster or other crisis, additional self-provided protection may be needed depending on your location and
hazards you will face.
Protecting your shelter
There are two areas you need to consider when constructing a
survival shelter
protection plan. Natural events and manmade events. Natural
events include extreme weather, mud slides, wildfires, earthquakes and
volcanic ash. Evaluate the potential of these hazards based on your geographic
location. Create a plan to protect and repair your home that does not
depend on outside resources.
Protecting your
resources
The best protected areas from natural disasters will be root cellars, crawl spaces, basements and
tornado shelters. Any structure, surrounded by earth embankments and
an earth covered roof can survive a tremendous amount of above ground
hazards. If your shelter is in an area prone to high winds from
thunderstorms, tornadoes or hurricanes, small flimsy metal buildings
can be easily blown away and destroyed.
Protecting yourself and
group members
Some of the same tactics you use for safe travel apply to
personal
safety. Avoidance of conflict by distance and non-attractive behavior is
the best defense. By not attracting attention or appearing as if you
do not have something others want, you keep a low profile. Depending on your
location and the potential for civil unrest, you may need to
develop a
defense and warning plan. You should also consider having a plan to
protect your family from wild or recently domesticated animals.
Natural disaster can displace animals as well as people.
