In the worst case event,
the ideal situation is to be where you plan to shelter the storm, whether
natural or man-made, well before the general public starts a panic or
mass migration.
There will be no prior warning for events such as earthquakes, or
terrorist attacks. Limited time warnings will be broadcast for
events such as economics collapse, hurricanes and some developing
natural disasters.
Let's Wait & See
As warning signs for man-made or natural crisis events start to
become apparent, a "wait and see" approach may prevent you from getting
where you want to be. Response to recent hurricane evacuations
show that all forms and routes of travel quickly become overwhelmed when
people finally get the message and attempt to leave the affected area.
Prepare for a longer
travel time
A normal 4 to 6 hour drive can turn into days if you get
caught up in a mass exodus from metropolitan areas or your travel path
goes through cities to get from point A to point B. Having a bug-out-bag
in your car at all times will go a long way to easing your travel
problems.
Travel Planning
Elements include:
Temporary Shelter
While traveling you may need to find or create temporary shelter for
you and those with you. Having previously practiced building temporary
shelters will be a big plus if you are delayed along your way.
Weather can change rapidly during the night, so ensure your chosen
over-night location is not in a natural drainage path, is
above
high water contours and out of the path of migrating people.
